Magic Marks the Spot is a wonderfully silly, funny, light and fluffy read, about a High Society girl who doesn't want do go to finishing school, if it's all the same to you- in fact Hilary would much rather join the Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates. And so, accompanied by her magic gargoyle, she decides that jolly well what she'll do. I really love Magic Marks the Spot; it's great for those days when you just need something light and cheery.
The Giver is a completely mind-bending book. It is set in a world radically different from ours, but as the book goes more and more of its alienness is revealed. The actual story isn't terribly gripping, though; the entire book is mostly just reveling in the strangeness of the setting, and the realization of how very strange it is. The ending is the vague sort that some people like, but I prefer conclusions to be more... conclusive.
